Habitat: Hardwood logs or woody substrates

The cap is white to gray, covered with short hairs, sometimes with a yellowish, tomentose margin, and usually is less obviously zoned than T. versicolor. The pores are circular to angular and white to tan then grayish when older. The flesh is relatively thick, tough and corky, and has a duplex structure---an upper, gray, soft fibrous layer separated from a lower whitish layer by a thin black line. T. pubescens (I. H. Schumann: Fries) Pilát has a tomentose, cream to buff, un-zoned cap, and the flesh is not duplex.
